Let’s find out if you are doing it correctly.
– Moisturizing not enough-
We all know that the key to good looking skin is moisture, right? Our skin loose water as we age so it is of great importance to keep the outer layer of the skin well plumped. It can hold 10 times more water as it weights, so make sure you are supplying it and then lock that moisture in.
– Over exfoliating –
Don’t exfoliate too much. It can lead to dryness, irritation and flaky skin. Exfoliation is great, but you should choose less harsh acids, like glycolic acid which won’t cause irritation. And do not exfoliate too hard and too often. Removing too much of the skin’s protective top layer of dead cells may give a noticeable glow, but it also makes the live cells underneath vulnerable to UV light and environmental attack, leading to inflammation (which is at the heart of every degenerative affliction).
– No sunscreen –
Not using SPF or using SPF lower than 30 may be really bad for your lines and wrinkles. UV light is one of the main photo-ageing factors and you should take care of defence against it from your early age. Make sure you wear SPF even in winter months or when it’s cloudy.
– Controlled damage treatments –
If you’re thinking about “controlled damage” treatment, them stop right here and listen to this: ‘Forcing cell turnover by wounding skin is a recipe for disaster,’ says Dr Ben Johnson of Osmosis skincare. He believes that skin — being as it is in a constant state of renovation — is perfectly capable of removing its dead cells in a timely fashion. True, with age, skin’s ability to maintain itself by creating replacement collagen slows, he says — but ‘damaging skin simply shifts already-depleted resources from maintaining the deep-lying dermis, where collagen is made, to repairing the new damage’. It results, temporarily, in a better-looking top layer of skin — but, over time, he argues, it weakens the support structure and integrity of the skin, speeding up the ageing process.
– Unhealthy lifestyle –
No anti-ageing skincare routine will be effective, if you lead unhealthy lifestyle. If you’re eating junk food, huge amounts of sugar, not getting enough sleep and smoking, even the most magical anti-ageing serum will be powerless here! Workout at least twice a week – intense workouts naturally boost human growth hormone levels in your body, keeping you younger and healthier!
